Blinds Vs. Shades – What’s the Difference?

Blinds and shades are terms that many people use interchangeably, but you may be surprised to know that they are two different types of window coverings. Here’s what you need to know when debating between blinds or shades for your home.

Characteristics of Blinds

Blinds are typically made of many individual slats that are “stacked” via a system of cords. The cords allow the slats to tilt up and down or retract as needed to adjust light and privacy. Blinds can be made from metal, plastic or wood and are available in many sizes. They can even be customized to fit your exact window dimensions. Blinds can provide many degrees of privacy or light control.

Characteristics of Shades

Shades, on the other hand, are usually made from a softer, more flexible material. Shades are also often one single piece that raises or lowers to adjust light and privacy. Unlike blinds, a shade doesn’t provide the multitude of privacy/light control options that a set of blinds can offer. But shades can provide more light control with even 100% blackout options available. Shades can be made from plastic or fabric and range from semi-translucent to completely opaque.

Depending on your needs, blinds or shades can provide the window coverage you desire with a style that matches your design taste.
